Working with Contractors
Information
The Academy of Languages maintains a local, national, and
international network of professional translators, editors, and
proofreaders who have expertise in many specialized fields such as
software localization, marketing, and the translation of technical,
medical, and legal documents. We consider our professional contractors
to be our most valuable resource.
We will provide interpreter training if necessary. Competitive pay

We receive a very high volume of resumes from freelance translators via
Internet. To qualify for written freelance assignments from the Academy,
you must have excellent native language proficiency, near-native ability
in your source languages, and expertise in an area outside of the
language pair itself, for example a command of technical, medical, or
legal terminology (more details below). All of our translators and
editors must be computer literate and accessible through fax and e-mail.
Highly recommended qualifications to have for freelance translation work
with Academy:
- Strong writing skills in native language, near-native proficiency in
source language
- At least three years experience as full-time freelance translator
- Computer literacy (basic software programs, such as Word, Excel, Adobe
Acrobat Reader)
- Localization familiarity/experience
- Subject specialization
- E-mail access/Capability to send and receive file attachments
- Fax capabilities
- Quality reference materials
- Proven record of timely project deliveries
- Strong references
Preferred qualifications to have for freelance translation work with
Academy:
- Bachelor or Master of Arts degree in Translation
- ATA-accreditation in your language pair, if offered
- Some formal training in the study of translation and industry standards
- Formal training/extensive experience in Localization
- Well-developed skills in Desktop Publishing (PageMaker, Quark, Freehand,
PowerPoint, Illustrator, etc)
- Graduate degree in a subject additional to Translation
- Translation or editing work relationship(s) established with colleague(s)
in language pair
- Training and substantial experience working with translation
memory tools
- Other certifications (such as court or DSHS)
If you meet the requirements for translators and editors, please

Your sample must include both source and target texts. We accept
electronic copies only. If you have the qualifications we are seeking,
we will add your name to our database for consideration for future
projects.
All interpreters who are interested in contracting with the Academy of
Languages are invited to e-mail or fax their
resume.
- Interpreters who wish to interpret in the medical field or community
must have passed the Department of Social Health Services (DSHS)
interpreter exams (DSHS certification) and have a current TB test.

- If you wish to interpret for the Academy at the Seattle Cancer Care
Alliance (SCCA) facility, you must take the Academy's SCCA interpreter
training course and pass the Academy's written and oral exam. Please
inquire for training dates and times.
- Interpreters who wish to interpret in the legal field for the Academy of
Languages and are speakers of either: Spanish, Cantonese, Cambodian,
Lao, Vietnamese, Korean or Russian must be Court Certified in the State
of Washington. For information, call the Office of the Administrator for
the Courts: 360-753-3365.
- All interpreters who interpret for the Academy of Languages must have a
Washington State Patrol check.
- All interpreters in all languages must abide by the Academy of
Languages' Policy and Procedures and Academy Ethics and Guidelines as
well as the Washington State Court Ethics and Guidelines for
Interpreters. These policies and guidelines are part of the Academy's
interview process, which takes place after the Academy has reviewed the
applicant's resume, received all records of certification, TB testing,
Washington State Patrol checks and visa or citizenship status.
- Potential interpreter resumes should include: language pair, level of
language skill and where your language skills were acquired, previous
interpreting experience and other relevant education and work
experience.
Conference and consecutive interpreters in all languages are encouraged
to apply.

Translators Association), NOTIS (Northwest Translators and Interpreters
Society), WITS (Washington State Court Interpreters and Translators
Society), SOMI (Society of Medical Interpreters), and NAJIT (National
